La Brea Tar
This fossil is a real petrified piece of tar from the provincial La Brea pits, one of the most important paleontological sites of all time. The bones inside are real and are from animals that became trapped in the pits sometime in the Pleistocene, about 10-20,000 years ago. Dozens of species and thousands of individual animal remains have been recovered from the pits- ranging from saber toothed cats to dire wolves, gigantic ground sloths, and even towering mammoths
