Baby Ctenochasma Skeleton in Matrix

This incredible skeleton this cast was molded off of belonged to a hatchling of the prehistoric flying reptile Ctenochasma. The original specimen is held on display at the American Museum of Natural History due to its incredible rarity and quality and this cast is no different. One can note the incredible detail of the tiny skeleton, from the needle-like teeth filling the jaws, to the rounded crest on its head that shows us this was a young male of the species! Comes on a custom hardwood stand. Ctenochasma was a small pterosaur from the Late Jurassic of Germany, living about 160 million years ago. It is most notable for the long delicate jaws packed with thin needle-like teeth. It used the teeth as a great filter in the air, a net to catch small flying insects as it soared with its 6 foot wingspan. It is also notable for the fact that it is one of the few species in paleontology where both sexes have been identified. Males possess a rounded crest on their head, which females lack.
